Hello, my name is Kristen Baker. I am so glad you are here. The most important thing to me, is YOU. As I share my story below, my hope is you feel less alone and more understood.
I am not shy or ashamed of what I experienced years ago and I am no stranger to anxiety, stress, negative thinking, panic attacks, and it all hit me out of the blue.
In the year 2000, I was hit with the anxiety monster, that's what I called it.. I had it all... negative- scary thoughts, racing thoughts, not eating, vomiting, and I didn't leave my house often, and I was debilitated. I suffered for a year. At first, I had no idea what was happening to me. I thought I was losing my mind. It came at a very stressful time. We were selling our home and had bought another one and our buyers backed out, a week before closing. At first, I remained positive, for roughly, 24 hours, then I was panicking and it was a ripple effect.
In my mind, this couldn't be happening to me. I was a successful business owner, a mom, a wife, and the one everyone came to for comfort and support. Well, it got me. It was the worst and best thing that ever happened to me. Anxiety does not discriminate. Doctors, Lawyers, Moms, Dads, Geniuses and beyond, they are not immune.
My care and compassion for people started at a very young age. When I was in second grade, I walked a young boy to school. I always showed other kids that I cared. In 5th and 6th grade, the school had a program called, " The Little Kids." The Little Kids were developmentally disabled and I was assigned a Little Kid. For two years, I worked with Sarah, supporting her, giving her love and showing her she was accepted. In fact, about 25 years later, my husband and I were getting ice-cream and I was sure Sarah was in front of us in line. It sure was, once she got her cone, she and her mom turned around and we locked eyes and she hugged me so tight. I cried, it was a moment I will never forget. She remembered me, to me, that showed I made an impact, even at such a young age.
Having studied psychology and law, I knew what I needed to do to feel better, but it was a struggle, I will not lie. I never felt more alone in my life. So many people would just say, " Get Over It." if it was only that simple. When I started to feel better and in control, I knew that I had to help others. Pen to paper, I began to write, what started as just a pamphlet, became a book. My expectation was to help at least one person and I did, therefore, it was a success. From there, I wanted to make a difference or try to with more people.
I began taking classes and trainings to learn so I could help people in life. I then started working as a coach. Initially, I had a deep interest coaching people with Anxiety Disorders, but over the years, my coaching areas expanded; positive thinking, stress relief, wellness, success thinking and most recently, coaching for caregivers of parents or loved ones. It is personal to me, as I am a caregiver to my mom who has dementia.
Being a caregiver is rewarding, but it is not absent of sadness, frustration, loneliness, anger and a myriad of emotions. Having a coach to walk with you through this most challenging time, is an investment in yourself, your sanity, and it is just for you.
I had taken a few years off coaching due to the pandemic; because I own a catering business and was trying to navigate a new business model after 35 years of myself being in charge, ( been in business 76 years) as catering was shut down. The pandemic and owning a business during this time, presented me and so many others with a new kind of anxiety, uncertainty and unknowns. Thankfully, I had the skills this time to not let it steal from me.
Three years ago, I sold the building I had owned for 22 years, that I had catered from and provided to go meals. The stress from Covid 19 was insurmountable. My mother got in a car accident during the pandemic, resulting in a ead injury and it pushed her into dementia. It was the right thing to do to sell. She now needed care.
So , I am back to coaching and am excited to work with you as a partner. This world is getting scarier and anxieties are higher than ever. The Dementia rates increasing, has created the Sandwich Generation. All too many are putting their lives on hold to care for a parent or a loved on. Being a caregiver is HARD, I can be your sounding board, I can help you lessen the stress, frustration, anxiety and be there for you.
I am honest, caring, compassionate, non-judgmental and I truly care about people and want you to live your best life, in an ever-changing world.
Coaching is an investment into yourself. There is no one more important. If we are not on the top of our game, we are no good to ourselves or others.
